Abandoned Amusement Parks Around the World & Why They Were Abandoned

From mysterious deaths, hauntings, and natural disasters, many theme parks have been left abandoned and unattainable to the public. While these parks have been lost, nothing has stopped people from exploring the remnants. To become an expert on the topic, I have examined various documentary videos and articles on these parks to determine the most interesting cases to highlight in this article.


Throughout the years various theme parks across the globe have opened and closed. While up and running theme parks receive lots of attention and media coverage, what happens to the parks that shut down? Why did the parks shut down to begin with? And what happens to the land once those parks are abandoned? 


Throughout this article, I will closely examine some of the eeriest abandoned parks in the world, diving into each one of their stories to answer these questions. Here are the parks that I will discuss in this article:

  • River Country - Disney (Bay Lake, Florida)

  • Lake Shawnee Amusement Park (Rock, West Virginia)

  • Hoy Thuy Tien Water Park (Vietnam)

  • Six Flags (New Orleans, Louisiana)

  • Gulliver’s Kingdom (Near Mt. Fuji, Japan)

  • Pripyat Amusement Park (Pripyat, Ukraine)

  • Okpo Land (Okpo-dong, South Korea)

    Hi Alyssa,
    I really like how niche this topic is. I think for your first paragraph you may want to add some imagery, like having the reader picture visiting an ominous abandoned amusement park. You could also set the tone as scary to draw in the reader some more. Looking forward to reading the final draft!

  “Trees of Life” - Choice 1 Throughout my life thus far, a tree that I have connected with are evergreens. While my current place of living does not allow for this interaction. Every time I go home, I am greeted by beautiful evergreens in my home town and even in my back yard. My father had a liver transplant three months ago. I cannot believe that it has been three months already. It has been three months since my father was given another chance at life, another chance to be a father, a husband. Another chance to just be a person. My father was given an estimate that there was a 50% chance he would have died in a month given the current state of his liver disease. This was a statistic I somehow wasn’t ready for. All I remember growing up was the constant fear I felt for my father's life. The first thing I would do when I came home from school everyday was make sure that he was still breathing. So why did this time carry more weight? Why did this statistic shatter my world?  At this point my father has been sober for several years, but had been carrying the weight of his consequences in the form of a liver disease.
