My Experience Fostering Dogs

Over the last two years, I have found something that I am really passionate about and it happened almost completely on accident. One day during the summer time a friend and I were just chatting about our dogs at home and how much we miss them. She then mentioned that she wanted to foster so she could hang out with puppies and joked about it almost. After laughing it off, I did the research for her. She bailed on the idea and then it became my own.

Two summers ago, I was living along far from home and was still new to California when I decided to start fostering dogs. This quickly became one of the biggest things I am passionate about in life and it makes so much sense I honestly don’t know why I didn’t think about doing it sooner. Once I started fostering, I was hooked and I knew that this was where I was meant to make a difference in our world.

I personally work with Mutt Scouts, an organization that is based out of Los Angeles and San Diego. Through this organization I have fostered several dogs and even rescued dogs off the streets myself. All of which are now in loving forever homes, which is the most rewarding part about it. Everyone always asks me how I do it and how do I not get attached, and the answer is you do get attached, but once you do it multiple times you get to see the big picture and the impact that fostering has and it’s so incredibly fulfilling. I would recommend that anyone that has the means and desire to foster should because there are so many animals that are in need of homes and anything is better than them being on the streets or in shelters.

To conclude this random assignment, I did want to admit that I did foster fail one time already. I adopted my fifth or sixth ish dog and flew him home for my family in Chicago. I love him so much I knew he was perfect for my family so I asked for forgiveness instead of permission and adopted him. His name is Digby (Pictured Above)!

  1. Alyssa,
What an awesome passion to have, I really respect you for saving these dogs. I definitely want to check out Mutt Scouts. I am actually currently fostering a god, Happy, from the shelter downtown, and its making me want to foster more dogs. Digby is adorable!

  2. Hi Alyssa! omg how amazing and selfless! Digby is so freaking cute! I love asking forgiveness rather than permission lmaao. I don't think I can foster dogs, but id o like walking and spending time with shelter dogs. As I have gotten older, I realize what I can and cannot handle. God bless you!
